Janaína - Queen of the Sea

Janaína is Queen of the Sea, Goddess of feminine beauty and the great Brazilian mother in religious mythology.

The poetic imagery of this two screen installation shows the ceremony during the day and night, as women walk to the sea on the gentle rhythm of the waves, in honour of Iemanja (as Janaina is often known) in Rio de Janeiro. The striking sound track is designed with unusual elements of percussion played in contact with water.

Anna Azevedo is an award-winning Brazilian filmmaker, who was born and lives in Rio de Janeiro. Her works are based on intense research into audiovisual language influenced strongly by vídeo art and poetry.

Anna’s work can be seen in world-renowned art institutions and festivals such as MoMA (NY), Berlinale, Kassel, Rotterdam, Sheffield (UK), HotDocs (Canada), Iran, CPH: DOX (Denmark), True or False (U.S).

Janaína é a rainha do mar, deusa da beleza e a grande mãe na mitologia religiosa brasileira.

Janaína: duas telas, dia e noite a caminho do mar, ao ritmo suave das ondas e da cerimônia de louvor a Iemanjá) no Rio de Janeiro. Uma video instalação que traz poesia nas imagens e no som, desenvolvida com elementos de percussão inusitados e tocados em contato com a água.

Anna Azevedo é uma premiada cineaste brasileira nasceu e mora no Rio de Janeiro. Desenvolve trabalhos em pesquisa de linguagem audiovisual em cinema documental, com forte influência da videoarte e da poesia.

Já apresentou trabalhos no MoMa (Nova Iorque) e em festivais de cinema como Berlim, Kassel, Rotterdam, Sheffield (UK), HotDocs (Canadá), Irã, CPH:DOX (Dinamarca), True or False (US) etc.
